During October, the Art Gallery at Arizona Western College featured oil paintings, mixed media and photographs from the Yuma Fine Arts Association Collection, selected by art faculty and students. One of the more prominent pieces was “House Spirits Gathering of the Past,” Suzanne Klotz-Reilly’s sculpture which has so many textures it takes more than one glance to see it all. On its main surface, the altar has three candles reminiscent of the Catholic tradition, framed by brightly painted flowers. At the top sits a white cross surrounded by Mexican tile, and at the bottom is a white mosaic of praying hands tucked between the ornate supporting pillars.

Seven Women’s House Keys is a tapestry-painting that combines traditional and contemporary Palestinian embroidery designs and needlework. The five by seven foot canvas incorporates remnants of traditional Palestinian hand embroidery (representative of specific villages in Palestine) created in an art salon composed of Palestinian women in Jordan.

The world has been the inspiration for Suzanne Klotz (’66 painting), who has instituted multi-cultural art programs, workshops and exhibitions in Africa, Australia, Israel, Mexico, Palestine, Taiwan, the United States and, most recently Amman, Jordan. In Amman, on a Fulbright Scholar award, she created an art salon and ran a collaborative workshop with Palestinian women and their families who were dispossessed from their homes and were living in refugee camps.

Three Cities Against the Wall is an exhibition protesting the Separation Wall under construction by Israel in the Occupied Territories of Palestine. This project involves groups of artists in Ramallah, Palestine; Tel Aviv, Israel; and New York City. The show will be held simultaneously in all three cities in November 2005.
