[MORE]During October, the Art Gallery at Arizona Western College featured oil paintings, mixed media and photographs from the Yuma Fine Arts Association Collection, selected by art faculty and students. One of the more prominent pieces was “House Spirits Gathering of the Past,” Suzanne Klotz-Reilly’s sculpture which has so many textures it takes more than one glance to see it all. On its main surface, the altar has three candles reminiscent of the Catholic tradition, framed by brightly painted flowers. At the top sits a white cross surrounded by Mexican tile, and at the bottom is a white mosaic of praying hands tucked between the ornate supporting pillars.

In the multimedia piece, a Mao Tse-Tung hat is buried in dirt in the drawer. This visual metaphor speaks to the demise of communism and Chinese tradition as a result of the influence of the Western world.
[MORE]“La Migra” was created over an eight-year period beginning in 1994. The freestanding sculpture is intricately detailed with carved, painted, beaded, embroidered patterns and imagery referencing Mexican heritage while individual dioramas depict scenes related to border crossings.
[MORE]“Milagros” are religious folk charms frequently attached to altars, shrines, and sacred objects found in places of worship, and they are often purchased in churches and cathedrals, or from street vendors. In Spanish, the word milagro literally means “miracle” or “surprise”.
